Census 2016

Pause and make a difference

On 9 August 2016, the Australian Bureau of Statistics held the 17th National Census. A national approach was adopted to communicate the broad top line messages to the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population about Census 2016, including what the census is; why it is important to participate; and how to participate.

With the pause button being the imagery for the main 2016 Census brand, we created the brand design for the First Nations version featuring the pause button with green circular pathways radiating outwards, interrelating and connecting with each other. Visualising a bird’s eye view, the artwork paints a picture of families living in their communities around Australia on Census night 2016. The inner circle represents the sharing of community information and the light yellow ‘sunburst’ patterning represent optimism for the future.
